Seminář Precious metals and market 26.11.2025 v Ostravě

The history of gold and silver coins begins in the 7th century BCE in Ionia, where electrum staters were first minted. Coinage evolved throughout the ancient Greek and Roman periods, as well as the Middle Ages. It flourished again in the modern times, when an influx of precious metals from the New World stimulated minting. During the seminar, we will examine how various issuers maintained monetary order despite the circulation of multiple currencies. We will also discuss inflation, debasement, production costs, seigniorage, and historical exchange rates. By tracing the evolution of gold and silver money, participants will gain insight into the economic logic, political control, and technological innovations that shaped the foundation of modern monetary systems. Many of these principles are still valid today.
